Film Analysis(Sinhala)

                   HAPPY BIRTHDAY🎥❤️

Director: Aruna Jayawardana

Year: 2022

Genre: Drama, Thriller

1. Introduction

“Happy Birthday” is a Sinhalese film of psychological thriller genre by Arun Jayawardana. The characters traumatized in the course of the film seek to regain their memories in the same manner as the trauma affected characters of their patients. The film stands out from the rest of its modern Sinhala film revolution counterparts with its interesting techniques in narration and exploring the human personality thus making it quite irresistible.

2. Plot Summary

All the action that is shown in the film revolves around the events that occurred at a birthday party for a little girl, when the truth is not where one would expect it to be. It is known that the events are not placed in a certain sequence, but presented so as once again to make the viewer feel frustrated. Who led up to such a chain of events and participants excitedly tries to disassemble the audience piece by piece.

3. Themes

  • Psychological Trauma

This is a very hot topic tackled by the film, it also reaches to that trauma and its effects to a person. Further to these, it is evident that a person is always haunted by things that were somehow never addressed, a thing that more often than not messes with how a person sees certain things or does.

  • Family Dynamics

The fifth element focuses on the duality of love, bitterness and hidden feelings and motives in relationships, in this case within a family which appear to be handling ordinary social interactions.

4. Character Analysis

  • Main Protagonist

The character who occupies the focal position in the narration, who is at the same time put through great peril and a range of useful experiences has been handle with skill. The self intended journey taken by the protagonist is one that revolves around self and inner conflict, mainly with one’s past.

  • Supporting Characters

Each subordinate character performs important investigative actions in revealing the internal murder within the plot. Each of them contributes to the development of the basic ideas of the action, mainly, how events are perceived from the eyes of different people.

5. Cinematography and Direction

As film’s primary concern is its psychological character, Aruna Jayawardana has implemented an innovative approach to the graphical aspect. Changes in lighting, close-ups and extreme camera angles emphasize the character’s mental state and the chaos within and around them. The cutting of the film in these various and different time and visually informative perspectives serves the purpose of heightening the feeling of tension and revealing the thoughtful plot of the movie bit by bit.

6.Narrative structure

This has been acknowledged as the film's main source of interest, and the ability to overcome the space-time limitations described in the story has to evoke the primal marshals of the film. Restructuring the way information is encoded and then retrieved practically removes constraints on how the narrative makes sense to the viewer. In addition to causing the shock factor, this technique usually represents the inconsistency in time and space associated with shock.

  7. Cultural context

In 'Happy Birthday', how events unfold from an individualistic perspective that transcends the Sri Lankan setting of addressing issues such as social pressure, family duty and mental health stigma. While accounting for issues such as the film's universality, the characters' backgrounds and relationships also capture the essence of Sri Lanka, creating greater depth to the narrative.

  8. Conclusion

For example, on her birthday, a three-year-old girl has to kneel down to her uncle for an apparent exaggeration. Traditional Sinhala cinema is a boundary stretching boundary. Apart from the psychological themes, we were able to build a story enhanced by factors such as strong performances. The core is devoid of typical stereotypes and instead provides an insight into the emotional and psychological aspects of the characters and focuses on idealism rather than realism. This analysis provides a detailed look at the tangible and intangible aspects of the film and emphasizes the place of 'Happy Birthday' in the cultural system.
